Whats the difference between China plywood technology and Europe technology ?
lets say the most common plywood size 4x8ft ,1220x2440mm .The biggest gap between Chinese and overseas production lies in veneer manufacturing. Limited by log sizes, Chinese factories splice small veneers,4x2ft :640x 1300mm . while foreign factories directly cut full-size seamless veneers :1300x 2500mm leading to differences in plywood performance and cost.
Chinese plywood mainly uses fast-growing poplar and eucalyptus with small diameters,generally diameter among 8-20mm Such logs cannot be cut into complete 4×8 ft veneers, so domestic factories adopt a standard small veneer splicing process.
Process flow: Logs are softened and rotary-cut into 4×2 ft small veneers. After drying, repairing and sorting, these small veneers are composed into complete 4×8 ft veneers. The finished plywood is completed through gluing, assembling, hot pressing, sanding and inspection.
Pros & Cons: This process makes full use of small-diameter logs, featuring low waste, high output and low cost, suitable for interior furniture, decoration and packaging. Due to veneer splicing seams, the plywood has average structural stability, tensile strength and water resistance, and is not recommended for outdoor load-bearing and high-end engineering projects.
Most European, American and Southeast Asian manufacturers use large-diameter natural logs, which allow direct production of full-size veneers without splicing.
Process flow: Treated large logs are directly rotary-cut intoseamless 4×8 ft integral veneers. After simple trimming, veneers are glued, assembled and hot-pressed into finished plywood.
Pros & Cons: Full seamless veneer structure delivers excellent stability, crack and delamination resistance, as well as great waterproof and load-bearing performance, perfect for high-end furniture and outdoor structural engineering. However, it requires premium large logs, causing higher wood waste and production costs.
Neither process is inherently superior. Chinese splicing technology focuses on cost performance and resource utilization, meeting general interior usage demands. Overseas full-size rotary cutting technology focuses on structural stability, catering to high-standard and heavy-duty engineering scenarios
